Introducing the Withings ScanWatch 2 and ScanWatch Light

With the recent launch of the next-generation ScanWatch 2 and the affordable yet feature-packed ScanWatch Light, Withings is solidifying its position as a leader in the health-focused smartwatch market. These two models not only boast impressive features and functionality but also offer a refreshing departure from the all-digital designs that have become the norm.

Let’s delve into the core specifications and differences between the ScanWatch 2 and the ScanWatch Light, exploring the innovative technologies that set them apart.

The ScanWatch 2: A Technological Marvel

The Withings ScanWatch 2 is a testament to the brand’s commitment to pushing boundaries and delivering the best possible user experience. Available in 38mm and 42mm case sizes, this smartwatch combines classic analog elements with a 0.63-inch grayscale OLED screen as a complication. With a sapphire crystal dial, stainless steel case, and crown, the ScanWatch 2 exudes elegance and durability.

Under the hood, the ScanWatch 2 packs a punch with its upgraded 16-channel PPG sensor and TempTech24/7 temperature sensor, both developed in collaboration with Swiss technology company GreenTEG. These sensors work in tandem with an upgraded accelerometer and altimeter to provide comprehensive health monitoring capabilities.

The ScanWatch 2 offers a range of color and design options to suit every taste. The 42mm version features a sleek silver/black combination, with a silver/white variant soon to follow. It boasts integrated lugs and a flatter bezel for a more noticeable aesthetic. On the other hand, the 38mm version sports a bar-style lug design and comes in silver/white, silver/black, and rose gold/sand options, with a rose gold/blue model planned for the future. The fluoroelastomer strap with a stainless steel buckle adds the perfect finishing touch.

The ScanWatch Light: Affordable and Packed with Features

For those seeking a more budget-friendly option without compromising on functionality, the Withings ScanWatch Light is the perfect choice. With a 37mm stainless steel case and Gorilla Glass protecting the dial, this smartwatch offers the same OLED screen complication as its counterpart.

While the ScanWatch Light may not include the upgraded PPG sensor or TempTech24/7 temperature sensor, it still delivers a remarkable user experience. The case back features an accelerometer and a PPG sensor, enabling accurate health monitoring. Available in silver/black, silver/white, and rose gold/sand, the ScanWatch Light combines style and affordability.

Both the ScanWatch 2 and the ScanWatch Light boast impressive battery life, with up to 30 days of usage between charges. The included charging dock ensures a quick two-hour recharge time. Additionally, these smartwatches are water-resistant to 50 meters and compatible with both iOS and Android devices, making them accessible to a wide range of users.

The Groundbreaking Body Temperature Monitoring

One of the most significant advancements in the ScanWatch 2 is its ability to measure body temperature. Withings has introduced the TempTech24/7 sensor, a groundbreaking technology that combines four hardware sensors to provide continuous temperature monitoring.

The first sensor measures skin and ambient temperature, providing a classic temperature reading. The second sensor, exclusive to Withings, is a heat flux sensor that measures the energy transfer between the watch and the body. In addition to these two sensors, the ScanWatch 2 also monitors heart rate and motion level. By analyzing these four parameters, the smartwatch offers 24/7 body temperature measurement, allowing users to track changes throughout the day and night.

Matthieu Menanteau, Withings’ head of consumer products, emphasizes the significance of this breakthrough:

“Body temperature is one of the key vitals, but it’s a world first that it’s on the wrist, and it’s not skin temperature, and it’s 24/7. We are proud to bring that to our customers.”

With the TempTech24/7 sensor, Withings empowers users to gain a comprehensive understanding of their body temperature, enhancing their ability to monitor their health and well-being.

Unparalleled Health Upgrades

While body temperature monitoring is a standout feature, the Withings ScanWatch 2 doesn’t stop there. Withings has incorporated several other health-focused upgrades to deliver a truly exceptional smartwatch experience.

Redesigned Optical Sensor

Withings has completely redesigned the optical sensor in the ScanWatch 2, enhancing its accuracy and performance. This upgraded sensor, combined with a new high dynamic range accelerometer, enables more precise activity recognition and detection.

The improved optical sensor increases the number of activities automatically detected and enhances the precision of detection. Whether you’re walking, running, or engaging in various exercises, the ScanWatch 2 will track your movements with unparalleled accuracy.

Enhanced HealthSense Algorithm

Behind the scenes, Withings has developed a new algorithm called HealthSense to interpret the signals received by the ScanWatch 2. This algorithm works in conjunction with the temperature capabilities and the PPG LED capabilities, enabling the smartwatch to measure heart rate variability (HRV) and respiratory rate.

The electrocardiogram (ECG) capabilities of the ScanWatch 2 have also received a boost. Withings has enhanced the ECG outputs, resulting in greater precision and expanded diagnosis capabilities. Users can expect more accurate readings and a comprehensive understanding of their cardiovascular health.

Cycle Tracking Made Easy

Withings recognizes the importance of menstrual cycle tracking for many individuals. With the ScanWatch 2, they have introduced a new cycle tracking feature. Menanteau explains:

“We’re really proud to bring menstrual cycle tracking capabilities with a manual log feature that’s only two clicks away, where you will be able to log whether you have your period and your symptoms. It will sync with the app, where you’ll be able to manage and follow what happens to your body.”

The inclusion of cycle tracking demonstrates Withings’ commitment to catering to diverse user needs and supporting individuals in their health journey.

FDA Approval and Competitive Pricing

With the launch of any health-focused device, regulatory approval is essential. Withings understands the importance of meeting regulatory standards and ensuring the accuracy and reliability of its smartwatches.

Matthieu Menanteau confirms that the ScanWatch 2 has received FDA approval for atrial fibrillation detection through ECG recording. While the original ScanWatch was also FDA-approved for blood oxygen measurements, the ScanWatch 2 has not yet received approval for this feature. However, Menanteau assures users that the performance of the ScanWatch 2 surpasses that of its predecessor, and he remains confident in obtaining approval in the future.

When it comes to accuracy and approval, Menanteau clarifies:

“All key metrics have been clinically tested and some of them are clinically validated, meaning they are FDA or CE regulated and approved.”

Withings has prioritized accuracy and compliance, ensuring that users can trust the data provided by their smartwatches.

In terms of pricing, Withings aims to make its smartwatches accessible to a wide range of consumers. The ScanWatch 2, available in both 38mm and 42mm sizes, is priced at $350 or 320 British pounds. The ScanWatch Light, offering an affordable alternative, comes in at $250 or 230 pounds. Both models are set to be released in October, giving users the opportunity to experience the future of health-focused smartwatches.

Conclusion: Embrace the Withings ScanWatch 2 and Revolutionize Your Health

In a market saturated with digital giants, Withings has carved out a niche for itself as the go-to brand for health-focused smartwatches. The ScanWatch 2 and ScanWatch Light represent a new era of wearable technology, combining elegant design with innovative features.

With the ScanWatch 2, users can benefit from continuous body temperature monitoring, enhanced optical sensors, and an improved HealthSense algorithm. The inclusion of cycle tracking further solidifies Withings’ commitment to providing comprehensive health monitoring solutions.

While FDA approval and competitive pricing add to the allure of the ScanWatch 2, it is Withings’ dedication to accuracy and user-centric design that truly sets the brand apart. With the ScanWatch 2 on your wrist, you can confidently take control of your health journey.
